REACH

The new EU Chemicals Regulation

Both the corporate management of Evonik and the product safety department of Evonik Industries AG are working intensively with the consequences of the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals) regulation, which came into force in June 2007.

We are actively participating in initiatives of chemical industry associations and also further in common actions of chemistry and customer associations in order to attain a most practical and economically feasible implementation of REACH. Our interest is thus not only focused on our company as a manufacturer of chemical products, but also to a high degree on the implications which arise for our customers.

Furthermore, in the business unit Consumer Specialties, which includes the product line Interface & Performance, a project group is working on REACH since the beginning of 2007, in which all activities concerning REACH for our business are being coordinated and prepared.

It is important to know that REACH includes only substances that are not polymers. No longer polymers (NLP), however, are included.

The REACH implementations are done according to the following stages:

  1. The first step, the pre-registration of all substances and monomers (> 2% in our polymers), that are part of our product compositions or the sole ingredient of a product, has been completed in time. Pre-registration numbers for pre-registered substances are given by the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) exclusively to the pre-registrant via its IT system.
According to the recommendation of our German chemical industry association (VCI, Verband der chemischen Industrie) we have decided not to communicate the pre-registration numbers in the supply chain. For the confirmation of substances which have been pre-registered, the relevant CAS and EINECS numbers can be searched on the ECHA website since January 2009. The CAS numbers and chemical names that have been pre-registered can be found there, but without a link to the company (legal entity) having pre-registered them.
  2. The next step has been the registration of all substances that are produced in an amount of more than 1,000 tons (active) per legal entity. The transition period ended on December 1st, 2010. Substances, that have been subject of registration within this deadline, will now show up in the MSDS of the individual products with their registration number.
  3. The third step will be the registration of all substances that are produced in an amount between 100 and 1,000 tons per legal entity.
These substances must be registered by June 1st, 2013. Registration-Projects to meet this deadline have already been started in and outside of existing consortia. However in case there will be a discontinuation of any of our products related to REACh we are committed to inform all our relevant customers at least one year in advance of the registration timeline for the specific volume band.
  4. The continuation of supply of the substances in the tonnage band between 1 and 100 metric tons (registration deadline June 1st, 2018) will be decided in the appropriate time.
